The Life and Memory of
Zell Scott
(1946 – 2022)
It is with great sadness that the family of Mr. Zell Scott announces his passing on October 4, 2022, in Albany, Georgia at the age of 76 years old.
Mr. Zell Scott was born on July 12, 1946, in Randolph County, Georgia. He was the fifth of six children born to Motell and Jessie Scott, who both proceeded him in death. Zell accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Benevolence Baptist Church in Randolph County, Georgia. In later years, he became a devoted member of Friendship Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia for over 30 years.
After reaching adulthood, Zell moved to Chicago, Illinois where he met and was united in holy matrimony to Bonnie Coney. From this union, two daughters were born (LaToy Sawyer and Kimberly Moss). He later settled with his wife and two daughters in Albany, Georgia where he worked for Miller Brewery for over 35 years. Zell proudly served for 15 years in the Armed Forces beginning with the United States Army in 1965, followed by the US Army Reserve and later the US Marine Corps Reserve. He also volunteered for many years as a Fulton County Reserve Deputy Sheriff. Zell was active in his community serving as an appointed member of the City of Albany/Dougherty County Fire Code Board of Appeals and a Prince Hall Freemason.
Zell was a beloved and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to all that knew him. He was a social, charming, and jovial person that enjoyed discussing politics, reading the bible, eating sweets, and he never met a stranger. He will be deeply missed and remembered with love and admiration.
Zell is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Scott. His legacy includes his three living children, Mr. Alvin Grier, Mrs. LaToy (Geoffrey Sr.) Sawyer, and Mrs. Kimberly (Chris R.) Moss; his sister, Ms. Mildred Scott Calloway; his grandchildren, Ms. Tiffany Yvette Rowe, Mr. Michael Grier, Ms. Chelsea Devin Taylor Grier, Cayden Scott Moss, Geoffrey Bernard Sawyer Jr., Brooke Lynne Elaine Sawyer, and Christopher James Moss; his great-grandchildren Semaj Stocks, Dallas Kyrie Talley, and Marlei Kelis- Taylor Hawkins; along with a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends. Zell is predeceased by his eldest daughter, Mrs. Veronica Walker Thomas (James); his brother, Mr. Clinton Scott; and his parents, Motell and Jessie Scott.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 A.M. on Friday, October 21, 2022 at Friendship Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. Memorial Services have been entrusted to Poteat-Wakefield Funeral Directors.
