Barbara Ward Carroll, the daughter of the late Mr. William and Mrs. Mary L. Thompson Ward was born March 13, 1939. She was the oldest of seven children.
Barbara transitioned from this earthly life to eternal rest on April 24, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband Hugh B. Carroll and her brother William “Billy” Ward, Jr.
Barbara was educated in the Dougherty County Public School System where she graduated from Monroe High School. The summer after graduation, she matriculated to Albany State College, now Albany State University receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. It was all work and no play for Barbara. She was an excellent student and was very active in extracurricular activities while attending High school and College. She was a majorette at Monroe High School and at Albany State College where she was adored and loved by the students on campus. She enjoyed campus life and being a part of many church, social and campus organizations. She became a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at Albany State College.
Immediately upon graduating from Albany State College, Barbara was accepted to Atlanta University, Atlanta, Ga. where she received her Master’s Degree in Library Science. Barbara worked briefly at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fl. She returned to her hometown of Albany, Ga. and accepted a position as Librarian at Albany State College.
Barbara joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Albany as a young child and remained a faithful member until her death. She was an active and dedicated leader while serving on the Circle 3 Ministry and the church choir. She was well received and celebrated by her church family members and friends.
Barbara was the matriarch of the family and provided guidance and direction to her siblings, children and grandchildren.
She remained active throughout her years traveling and spending time with extended family and friends.
Barbara was married to Hugh B. Carroll and to this union, two sons were born. Her contributions to her family and friends will always be remembered.
She leaves a legacy of love and fond memories to be cherished by her two sons: Joel H. (Monica Watson) Carroll of Warner Robbins, GA; Eric W. (Crystal) Carroll Sr. of Raleigh, NC.; six grandsons: Joel H. Carroll, Jr. of Albany, GA, Justin Carroll of Warner Robbins, GA., Brandon Henderson of CA; Eric W. Carroll Jr., of Charlotte, NC, Ellis Hugh (Shahrazad) Carroll of Fairfax, VA,. Christopher R. Carroll of Raleigh, NC; five siblings: Rev. Gloria Ward (Daniel Jr.) Wright of Atlanta, GA., Ernest Ward of Albany, GA., Ella Jean Ward of Atlanta, GA., Carl F. Ward “Karim Aziz” of Atlanta, GA., Cassandra Ward of Smyrna, GA.; one uncle: Thomas Ward of Sharon Hill, PA.; one aunt: A. Shirley Ward Brown of Atlanta, GA.; one brother-in-law: William “Billy” (Naomi) Carroll; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and neighbors whom she loved dearly.
