Ella Keaton Murray, a devoted wife and mother, was born April 8, 1936, in Dougherty
County, Georgia to the late Members and Viola Holsey. She was preceded in death by 2
sisters and 2 brothers: Ethel M. Redding, David Holsey, Mary L. Holsey, and Elijah J.
Holsey. She departed this earthly life Thursday, March 14. 2024 at the Wynfield Park
Health & Rehabilitation Center.
For many years, she was married to the late Deacon Leroy Keaton, Sr. and mothered 3
children: Carolyn, Leroy, Jr., and Leon who also preceded her in death.
On March 23, 2000, she married the late Deacon Herbert L. Murray, Sr. and mothered 6
children.
Mrs. Murray confessed her faith in Christ at an early age and became an active member of
First Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. She served as a Deaconess, Youth
Committee member, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher and other church
ministries. She was also known for adding her special touch to her cooking and baking.
Mrs. Murray attended the Dougherty County public schools and graduated from Monroe
Comprehensive High School in 1957. She attended and graduated from Albany State
University as a Business Major, and later earned her Master’s Degree in Education from
Georgia State University. She taught elementary school in McRae, Hazlehurst, and
Preston, Georgia where she retired. She was passionate in her teaching and enjoyed seeing
her students excel.
She leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted and loving sister, Mattie Harden, a faithful
godson, Joseph Martin, 6 children; Marguerite Williams, Jacqueline (Johnny) Brown,
Delores Westley, Gail Ponder, Deborah Udoto, Herbert (Tonie) Murray, grands/great-
grands, a host of nieces and nephews, best friends, Mrs. Betty Jenks and Mrs. Katie
Martin, and a loving First Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church family.
Her special smile, encouraging words and giving heart will truly be missed.
