Dorothy Reese Hunigan was born on March 16, 1940 to the late Robert Reese, Sr. and Beatrice Barnes Reese. She was married to the late Technical Sargent Ernest Hunigan.
Dorothy accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at First Bethesda Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend B. J. Jordan. She served faithfully until relocating to Miami, Florida. After moving to Miami, she united with Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church where she served as Church Secretary, on the Trustee Board, and sang in the choir. After returning to Albany, she united with First Bethesda Baptist Church again where she served faithfully until her health began to fail.
Dorothy was a 1958 graduate of Monroe High School in Albany. She earned a Bachelors degree from Albany State (College) University and a Master’s Degree from NOVA University. She retired from the Miami-Dade County Public School System after more than 30 years of service. She was a member of the United Teachers of Dade County and served as a building steward for many years. She was also a member of the National Education Association, Albany State National Alumni Association, Afroconmore Civic and Social Club, and supported many nonprofit organizations.
Dorothy had a sweet and loving spirit. She was always willing to lend a hand wherever needed. She was slow to anger and chose her words carefully. She loved her family and friends and showed it in various ways. Dorothy enjoyed traveling with friends and exposing her nieces and nephews to different places. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed water aerobics, where she met many new friends. The students and faculty at Arvada Middle School in Miami, Florida loved “Miss Hunigan”, where she served as a mentor to many young people. She volunteered with Egbe Omoje, an organization formed to help young ladies between the ages of 11- 18 develop positive self-images.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two stepchildren, Karen Hunigan and Marcus Hunigan, Sr.; four sisters, Martha Reese, Mary R. Duhart, Delorise R. Holiday, and Lucile Reese; three brothers, Robert Reese, Jr., Andrew Reese, and Elijah Reese.
She leaves a legacy of love and sweet memories with one stepson, Danny Hunigan, four brothers, David (Juanita) Reese, Sr., Jim Reese. Charlie (Barbara) Reese, and Ray Reese; five sisters, Fannie R. Bell, Jacqueline Reese, Yvonne Reese, Alma (Larry) Blakely, and Mildred R. Faison; one aunt, Macy Owens, one daughter-in-law, Shelly Hunigan, two brothers-in-law, Eule Duhart, Sr. and George Holiday; eight grandchildren, Reggie Hunigan, Cynthia Hunigan, Nicole Simmons, Evelyn Hunigan and Anthony Hunigan, Celeste Hunigan, Michael Hunigan and Marcus Hunigan, Jr.; one God daughter, Tracy Williams. and a host of sorrowing nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
